A Letter Worth Reading.

Hello fellow Michaelians and of course to the author of this blog, Mr. Khiew!

It's the year 2010 and I for one definitely enjoyed seeing how my beloved school is improving exponentially. It is even a joy to see my fellow classmates and students from my batch respond to this post. It just shows that no matter what, we will never forget our past nor glory times in high school.

I wasn't one of the straight A's students and somewhat don't believe that straight A's means instant success, however I'm still grateful for the education received as the school has truly showed me that my hunger for Science can never be curbed. I can only say to the young Michaelians, that even if they are unable to achieve straight A's, they should be happy to recognize their strong points and weaknesses to work on.
This is the lesson we continuously learn throughout our whole life. As long as they work hard, they can even overcome the "geniuses" in class.
Having said that, I hope I have passed on a word of wisdom and would even like to remind students that there are plenty of scholarships out there in the world. It's just a matter of looking for them. If you think that's impossible, just remember that I've managed to do it.
Currently I'm studying in the University of Tulsa, Oklahoma, being a double major in Biology (Graduate of 2008) and Mechanical Engineering and will be looking into doing my Masters in either Biomedical Engineering, Petroleum Engineering or Mechanical Engineering.

From the Editorial: Thank you, Jayanth. Your letter came at the right time. We wish you well. It would be great if more old Michaelians can write to us more frequently, letting us know more about yourself, when in school and presently.

Grand Clean Up Do At St Michael's.

It was a big gathering to demonstrate the Michaelian ideal of Service. All came with their sleeves rolled up to do their part to beautify the school. Old and damaged items were checked to see whether they could be repaired. Otherwise, broken tables, cabinets, racks and chairs had to be discarded. Classes were spruced up. Notice boards were decorated and posted with reading materials, duty rosters, calendar and pictures while some initiated ones even cover their desks with colourful table cloths.
The basement under the stage was another hard to clean place. (Note: Many believe the mysterious and widely talked-about underground tunnel is situated here. It was also believed that the Japanese once used this place for undisclosed reasons). Picture below shows Mr Christopher and his scouts point to something! What's that?

Yes, a civet cat has long chosen the basement as its abode.This mammal could be very old, judging by its looks. It could be having a type of skin disease too. The elusive civet cat is still somewhere at the basement.

Ten years down the road, this Michaelian will still be proud with what he did during the Gotong Royong. He is Wong Zhen Jie, Form Two.

Overall, it was inspiring to see teachers and students working closely together for a common cause. Michaelians all around the world are rest assured that the culture and tradition of St Michael's practised for the past 98 years is still very much alive. For me that day was a great and meaningful success.

STPM 2009 - Way To Go St Michael's

SMI scored more that 95% passes in the 2009 STPM. Three scored 4As. They are Eddy Chow Mun Tik (left), Tan Jian Liang (right) and Tai Chi Loong. More details later. Mr Phoon Chong Chee, who was present in the hall during the release of the results, congratulated the boys and their parents. Jian Liang aspires to study medicine while Chow and Tai hope to pursue fields in engineering.

Michaelians Walk Tall In Golf

Two Michaelians showed their mettle in golf when Justin Thong Jia Li (right) walked home with the top prize at the state-level MSSPK golf competition held at Kinta Golf Club in Batu Gajah on Feb 9 and 10. His compatriot Ali Reza Khairuddin was placed 4th. The duo represented Kinta North in the annual event.

A Short Note

Just a short note to say hello for visiting. The school magazine is in the final stage of being printed. Michaelians, present and past, will be able to hold a copy of the "Michaelian Spirit" very soon. This is a magazine many are waiting for. Breezy, informative and "up to the mark". The cover design is bold and creatively hand-drawn.

The school drama, titled "The Brave One" will be in July 2010. Again, this is another masterpiece by Master Timothy Chee. Wait for further details. Posters will be ready soon and would be posted here as soon as I get the softcopy from the printer.

St Michael's Speech Day is tentatively on 21 July 2010. Guest-of-honour will be Dato' Seri Husni Hanadzlah, an old boy. He is currently the Finance Minister II.

Sports Day is scheduled for April 1, 2010. St Michael's is going to invite home another sports hero among the old boy. We had Mr Asir Victor and Mr Foo Keat Seong last year. The school actually planned to have Dato Ng Boon Bee (below, a Thomas Cupper, for the coming sports day but he declined due to some commitments. Hope to get Dato next time.

Funeral mass will be held at St. Xavier's Institution Chapel, Farquhar Street, 10200 Penang on Thursday, 4 Feb. 2010 at 3.30pm.
No wreaths, & scrolls by request.
All contributions received will be given to charitable organizations.
